el ninho climate change and its effect on Somalia

The extreme climate change and effects of famine are causing high death rates of children in Somalia,

breaking the records of last 60 years. There can be multiple reasons listed which are responsible for

causing a massive damage including El Ninho. El Ninho is a climate effect which causes the oceans to

warm more than its temperature. This natural phenomenon is causing the change in climates and

temperature of land and oceans.

Africa especially Somalia is badly affected by the El Ninho which results in less rain in the area as low as

2 to 8 inches below the normal rain in a year. This leads to drought in Somalia throughout the year,

scarcity of food and shortage of water due to no agricultural activities in most of the area or little

options for agriculture are available.

The people of Somalia are even short on drinking water and therefore the death rate is increasing

majorly consisting of infants and children. It is estimated that the extreme climate change, famine and

massive drought in the history will cause more damage to the Somalian as food available for each

person is still not sufficient.

The unstable political conditions of Somalia have made the conditions worse. NGOs and UN have less

access to the people and food cannot be fully supplied in the areas affected by the famine. The land of

Somalia is known for the biggest and longest drought of the history and uncontrollable climate changes

are predicted in the future as well. In addition, the El Ninho time duration is also shortened from 2 years

to 11 months to cause more damage. Due to all the above reasons, about 5 million people of Somalia

are dying each year and most of the population is undernourished. Apart from that 200 million

population of Somalia is malnourished due to famine and drought.
